VAT issue – anyone else affected or have contact with Amazon VAT team?

Hi everyone,

I’m dealing with a VAT issue and wondering if others had a similar experience or have tips on how to reach Amazon’s VAT team.

Amazon claims my business is not EU-established and didn’t collect VAT for a certain period, based on the EU eCommerce VAT rules.

However, the VAT during that time was correctly filed and paid to the German tax office, as my sole proprietorship in Germany remained active until Dec 31, 2023.

In 2023, I moved to Switzerland and set up a GmbH. The Amazon account was updated in Jan 2024, and since then, VAT has been handled properly by Amazon. Still, Amazon is demanding VAT for the transition period — without specifying which transactions or dates are affected — and tells me to reclaim it from the tax office (which is not possible without concrete details).

I’ve sent all documents and proofs, but haven’t heard back for months.

Emails to mdri-exec-escalations@amazon.co.uk go unanswered.

Has anyone dealt with this kind of issue before?

Do you have a working contact for someone at the VAT team?Or suggestions on how to escalate this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated – payouts have been blocked for 5 months and it's seriously hurting our business.

Thanks in advance!

Hello @Seller_9J1oPGjMbwJ07,

My name is Gala and I would like to help you further with your question.

As I understand your post, you're dealing with a VAT issue for a while now. You're also saying that you correctly filed and paid to the German tax office, as your sole proprietorship in Germany remained active until Dec 31, 2023. In 2023, you moved to Switzerland and set up a GmbH. The Amazon account was updated in Jan 2024, and since then, VAT has been handled properly by Amazon. Still, Amazon is demanding VAT for the transition period.

Could you explain what documents you sent to the according team so far and what was their feedback on them?

As I would like to help you, I'd need you to kindly share the Performance notification details with me, if you received one, so we can check together if something is missing or unclear. You can of course black out any personal information, before sharing.

Furthermore I recommend you to use the ''Call Me Now'' Button that you find on your Account Health Dashboard in order to get in touch with the Account Health Performance Team. The German team is available from 9 AM to 5 PM CET and through the UK Marketplace you should have 24 hour support. This team has access to your account and may guide you as well through the next steps, can check the performance notifications with you and guide you based on internal feedback, which might be useful for you, in order to solve the VAT problem. I hope this helps. :-)

The forum community and I are here to support you.

Please keep us up to date and write here if you have any further questions.

Best regards,

Gala
