We getting a 1-star review without any comments. And, then being unable to request removal through the Feedback Manager in Seller Central. This, on top of the buyer not responding to our email.
This makes us feel very helpless. We want to provide customers with the service and know what their demands are, but customers do not give us a chance.

You are confusing many things:
That is called rating.
This is ONLY for feedbacks, not for reviews and ratings.
It is NOT allowed to contact the buyer in regard of reviews/ratings/feedback. Amazon will suspend your account for that!
Reviews: the customer leaves a comment on the product page, down under the product description. You don't see this in "Feedback Manager"
Ratings: the customer leaves stars without comment on the product page, down under the product description. You don't see this in "Feedback Manager"
Feedback: are visible in feedback manager, the customer sees them by clicking on your seller name under the price. That is what you see in "Feedback Manager". Here you can click and ask "Remove".
