Missing Inventory from Removal Order

So Amazon decided to let me know that a whole shipment had been distributor damaged and I had to create a removal order to remove it, which I did. I still haven't had it back and when I just checked on the reports, the removal order has been cancelled by Amazon as they say there was insufficient stock to send back. The mind actually boggles as to what happens to our stock, so now I haven't had it back, it's not been put into my inventory, so where is it?

Have opened up a case with Amazon seller help but god knows what lame excuse they are going to come back with. Has anyone else had this?
