Merging Mayhem

I had two similar, but different, listings merged. I went from two ASINs each with its own SKU/FNSKU to two listings sharing the same ASIN and retaining their original SKUs. Various other details were exchanged, the results being neither listing was quite right.

First I asked SS to de-merge the listings. They wouldn't do it for all sorts of reasons.

Next I asked if they would let me edit the two listings to at least get right of the discrepancies that the merging had created. Since the merge I have lost the ability to edit either of the listings. They said the only way to do this was to delete the listings for 24 hours and then recreate them with the correct details.

Thry seemed oblivious to how much hassle this unnecessary merge had caused and that I was now expected to lose 24 hours worth of sales on the two listings and hope that I would be allowed to recreate them and that all the sales history etc would be retained in order to put things back to where they were just a week ago.

It's an absolute fiasco.

Have you been able to relist your products since you last posted this?

I've had this happen to us so many times in the last 18 months that I've lost count.

I have an active spreadsheet on the go telling me what has been randomly combined so I can get them sorted as I go.

You will never get anyone in support or brand registry to understand that the problem even exists. The only thing you can do is delete the listings and recreate.

That said, JUST doing that won't be enough. They will simply re-merge when you add them back in, even if you leave them over a week before you do. You'll need to add one back in and then correct/change details on it, make sure the variation family is in place correctly (if there is one) before adding back the product it was being combined with.

Even then, they may re-merge a week or two down the line unless you've identified what made the bots think they were the same product in the first place. For us, we had a lot of item titles start with the same 3 or 4 words because the part that differentiated them was further into the title.

In the end, we had to rename the items to make them as different as we were able to, particularly the first few words. That SEEMS to work.
