What is my next step for Customer Return of a Book
Customer found a defect with the book I shipped and E-Mailed that he wanted a refund. I agreed to provide total refund and asked him to return the book via Amazon. He contacted Amazon and they sent him a return label. In fact he has a label with a tracking code from UPS. Problem is that was about 10 days ago and UPS still does not have the book. I have not authorized the refund yet via Amazon, although it appears Amazon is waiting for me to do so. Customer has not sent the book back. I do not know whether he already received a refund. I do know that Amazon is waiting for me to do something, like authorize the refund when I receive the book. Right now I am in a stalemate position. I do not intend to E-Mail the Buyer again.
What should I do at this point as Amazon is telling me I have an Open Return Request that under "return Status" is Auto-authorized?
By the way, my options appear to be:
1. Do nothing and wait! Continue to see this item under Manage Returns
2. Take Action and click on Issue Refund
3. E-Mail Buyer
Right now I am choosing option #1 and hoping he gives the book to UPS with the prepaid label he has.

Do not refund until you recieve the book back. Unless it get a refund at first scan (which appears from what you have said it hasn't been shipped back yet) then you can examiine the book upon return and decide on any fees that need to be charged.

Bingo has been called.
As @Seller_OvL8C4BJWiuS9 has noted you will only be charged if the buyer sends it back and Amazon does their RFS process.
If they buyer never sends it back it will eventually disappear from the pending refunds section.
NEVER send a 'reminder' to the buyer/renter since it might wake them up and they would actually return the book!
I never 'close' them either since I don't trust Amazon. I figure if I close it Amazon will be 'helpful' and send a note to the buyer saying "you forgot to return this".

From time to time, buyers/scammers will request refunds from sellers for "defective" items, hoping that we as sellers won't request the item back. This may be one of those cases.
(A lot of sellers do this because the cost of the item is low and the return shipping expenses would result in a net loss)

He is still reading the book! When he is done reading it ,in about 2 weeks he will throw it in a box (UNPROTECTED) and ship it back for a FULL REFUND. You don't sell books on Amazon, its a FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY!!!! Just like many other categories on this site! And the best part is YOU PAY the shipping BOTH WAYS!!!!

I'm having a similar issue, except that I DID receive the return back and I DID refund the customer in full. It even says "previous refund applied" when I go to the return page, but the return request still sits pending over a month after I've refunded the customer. As far as I can tell, I did my part and it will hopefully eventually just go a way like returns that never get returned eventually do. I would say you're probably good to just sit and wait.

I would estimate that about a third of the books that the buyer wants to return are actually returned. The buyers either forget about it or change their minds. In these cases nothing needs to be done. If the book is not scanned, Amazon does nothing. If the book is returned in anything other than the condition it was in when you sent it, ,you may want to file a claim.

There's nothing you can do but pray that the book finally reaches you. If the book is a POS likely to appeal to other AZ buyers, pray that it doesn't.
